Movie Review: Little Children

I love this movie to death.  This is probably the best I've seen since last year. It grips you right up to the end.  It's a story about two couples, Sarah (Kate Winslet) is a plain-looking wife with a master's degree and married to a husband who has sexual fantasies with a sexy internet celebrity and Brad (Patrick Wilson) who is a handsome house husband married to a stunning and accomplished documentary filmmaker Kathy (Jennifer Connelly).  Their insecurities and I think their dissatisfaction with the life they have, that "hunger for an alternative, to a better life", made them give in to their desire.  For Kate I think it was the need for her to be wanted as a woman and for Patrick that feeling of being depended on instead of depending on someone.  The neighborhood even adds character to the story -- they live in a suburb, those typical town where neighbors know each other and judge each other secretly.  There's an ex-convict pervert who returned to the town back from the prison, which caused a ripple in their every day lives.  The ending is the best, it could have easily turned into a deeply disturbing, ugly destruction of the human spirit, but it didn't.

Here's my favorite dialogue when after making love, Sarah asked Brad about his wife. 

Sarah:  Is she pretty?
Brad: Yes
Sarah: How pretty?
Brad: A knockout.
[Silence]
Brad: Pretty is overrated.

It's so easy for those people who are beautiful to to say beauty is nothing. 

The ending was beautiful, it surges and roots for you, yes to second chances, blessings, hope! Kate Winslet is riveting, this movie is successful in making her ordinary but she still seems golden. Jennifer Connelly is a stunner, like a diva, a wife you envy. The actor who played the pervert Jackie Earle Haley (nominated for Best Supporting Actor in every award show) pulls this role so good, awkward, a misfit, silently menacing but broken.  You should see this movie, now before they pull it out!  Babel is nothing compared to this movie, I tell you.
